Renovating bathrooms perhaps require greater attention than those in other parts of the house because of the increased moisture levels such spaces are faced with on a routine basis. As such, it is important to get bathroom furniture purchases right and Pat Logan of the National Ledger has recommended homeowners invest in glass shelves for this particular room as they will perform well in damp conditions.
The writer advised against particleboard or oriented strand board as they will not hold up particularly well, while glass is also relatively easy to keep clean and would not require painting, as wood might. "Don't just immediately start drilling holes all over the wall," the correspondent remarked. "Take some time to consider what you will store on each shelf." In contrast, wood as a design feature can be used to great effect in bathrooms, but homeowners may be worried that the material will be adversely affected by moisture in the living space.
However, author and interior designer Rose Bennett Gilbert does not believe this will be too much of an issue, noting in an article for the Sioux City Journal that new finishes can render wood nearly impervious to the wear and tear of daily life, with protective surfaces making light of splashes and spills. She advised discussing moisture resistance with professionals prior to making any purchases to ensure the right products are invested in. "You are right in realising that wood and water are mortal enemies, but that just means you can't allow puddles to stand around on wood surfaces for days on end," Ms Bennett Gilbert remarked.
